Trouble: A Witty, Emotionally Charged Swedish Comedy
Introduction
Netflix on 10/3/24 offers a new Swedish scripted crime comedy. The movie’s title is “Trouble.” The film is a reimagining of a 1988 farce. Jon Holmberg is the writer/director of the new version. He co-authored the screenplay. It is named “Strul” in its original Sweden. This film is a ridiculous and wild ride.
Synopsis: The travails of a m
uddled man
The protagonist’s name is Conny. He is a divorced electronics salesman. Conny is not adept at his job. He feels like a useless failure in his career. Conny feels particularly insecure next to his ex-wife’s new partner, who is a pilot. He is desperate to be a good dad. He really only looks forward to spending time with his daughter, Julia.
One day, he installs a new television. While wearing noise-canceling headphones, he becomes an unwilling witness to a murder. He is framed for the murder. The scene then shifts to him in prison. Being in prison, he meets two other inmates. They mistake him for the pilot. The inmates enlist Conny in their plan for an escape.
A Mix of Cheer and Soul
“Trouble” is not a smart or clever film. The filmmakers were not going for loud and silly. Their humor is dry and understated. The story’s charm is the main appeal. It is a crime comedy
about a father’s love. Conny’s naivety is secondary to their bond. The bond between father and daughter took precedence. Filip Berg is at his best as the hapless Conny. He has a laid-back, all-straight-face charm to him. Amy Deasismont plays Diana. Diana is a police officer who helps Conny. Their chemistry is interesting. They were an excellent pair.
The film does have some problems. At times, the plot convolutes. It requires a stretch of your imagination. Sometimes it feels like some of the scenes were direct and desperate. The movie uses clichés. Instead of fighting back, he runs away. These moments can be frustrating. The movie is fun and engaging to watch.
Conclusion
“Trouble” is a fun flick. It is hopelessly complicated and twisty. The comedy is awkward and silly. That somehow makes it really funny. It’s a great distraction. It is perfect for a movie night. Don’t go in expecting a deep, complicated story. Just come ready to have some fun. “Trouble” deserves to be on your watch list. It is a must-watch for comedy fans. It is refreshing. It is the exact opposite of a serious Nordic drama.
