How SAT scoring works
SAT is scored in the range of 400-1600 which is a combination of two sections:
- Evidence based reading and writing (200- 800)
- Math (200-800)
Additional breakdown of the scores are percentiles and sub-scores.
For instance, an average score would range from 1050-1150 and any score above 1450 takes you to 5-6% of the overall test takers.
Colleges with good SAT scores
It is not a one-size-fits-all scenario when you are applying. This is a ballpark range in which universities have been considering SAT scores. An Ivy league school would be in the range of 1500-1570+, high selective schools like NYU and UCLA would be in the range of 1400-1500. State universities and strong regional schools would be from 1200- 1350 and the community college would be 1000-1150.

The merit-based scholarships are benchmarked on SAT scores. 1450+ would help you get a good scholarship, 1200-1440 would help you get a moderate scholarship and anything below 1200 would help you with scholarship, but other factors would also be considered like your GPA and extra-curricular activities.

Many US universities are still going with the test optional criteria, but submitting your SAT score will strengthen your application, it will help compensate if your GPA scores are low and help with merit-based scholarship.

How to decide what’s “good” for you, look at the middle 50% range of your dream school. Aim at the upper range and stay competitive, any score above 1400 would be a good score.
Tips to increase SAT score
As you reach the test dates try and do all the practice tests on the college board and analyze the question which you got wrong and why you got it wrong. The college board materials are your go to for any reference. Work on your time management and figure it out where you taking more time is it English or the math section.
