Born in 2000 in a little village named Dhing, from which the author of this story was on a lifelong journey. Raised in a modest farming family, she was raised in a world of rice fields as opposed to track fields. Her parents, Ronjit and Jonali Das, were farmers also, and she was the fifth of five siblings.
What made her story so inspiring is that she didn’t from the start aspire to be a sprinter. In fact, she was into football and played it up in school. It was a teacher who saw her speed, which in turn gave her the decision that set her on a path to athletics, a decision that would change her life forever.
Career
Hima Das came onto the world stage in 2018 when she made history at the World U20 Championships by getting a gold medal in the 400m. Also, at that young age, she became the first Indian to achieve this in a track event.
That same year, she won silver in the 400m and gold in relays at the Asian Games, which also saw her named the “Dhing Express” and become a national icon. Over the years also been known for adding to her list of international gold medals in 2019, which included a great run of success in Europe.
In her career, there have been ups and downs. In 2023 and 2024, she had issues with injuries and, for a time, was suspended because of out-of-competition whereabouts failures, but that is over now, and she is back in the running to compete again.
In addition to athletics, she is also a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police, which is a public service role.
