Veteran Actor Govardhan Asrani’s Death, Biography, Religion, and Net Worth in 2026.

Govardhan Asrani, which through out his long and successful career was known simply as Asran,  was one of the most adored character actors and comedians in Indian cinema. Born Govardhan Asrani in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on 1 January 1941 tomiddle-classass Sindhi Hindu family, which had to seek refuge in India post the 1947 partition, Asrani’s journey was from very little to great heights. From poverty to fame,e his life was a story of laughter, memorable film characte, rs and a lasting place in the heart of the Bollywood audience.

Asrani’s foray into acting was with a passithatich outgrew what he did in his early school days. To support his dream, ms he worked as a voice artist at All India Radio in Jaipur while pursuing his studies. Very muchhands-on on man, he also went to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) inPunen,e which also happened to be the school that many of his future colleagues attended. After graduation, he made his film debut in the Hindi movie Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiyaan in 1967 and soon became a part of the changing face of cinema in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

In a career that covered five decades, Asrani appeared in over 350 Hindi and Gujarati films, in which he played a wide range of roles from comedy to support and lead roles. His most unforgettable performance was that of the oddball jailor in the massive hit Sholay, which made him a star for life and endears him to movie fans for generations. He worked with great directors and actors, who saw him in classics like Chupke Chupke, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhammal, and Welcome.

Asrani also took up direction behind the camera, which saw him do films like Chala Murari Hero Bann,e and also had a creative input to many projects in Hindi and Gujarati cinema. He was known for his versatility as an actor and great comic timingng which made him a star in Indian entertainment.

Tragely Asrani died on 20 October 2025 at the age of 84, after a long health struggle, which included issues with lung fluid buildup. At Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai, he passed away and was given a private cremation at Santacruz Crematorium,m which was as per his personal wish. Also, there wa as wide outpouring of grief from the film industry and fans.

Off-screen, Govardhan Asrani was married to actress Manju Asrani (née Manju Bansal) in a union that they shared not only in life but also in many of his film projects over the years. Although very private about it, what little was known of his family life was that it was built on support and filled with passion for the movie industry.

At the time of Asrani’s death, he was reported to have a net worth between 40 and 50 crores (about $5 6 million) from a career that he had been a part of for many years. Also over the course of his career, which spanned many generations and put out hit after hit in the Indian film industry, he achievedsuccess,  which also included outreach through brand endorsements and television appearances that also did very well. Based out in the ever-changing but still very present Indian film industry, which also cemented his legacy.

In the year 202,6 Govardhan Asrani is still remembered not only for his versatility as a performer but also as a cultural icon,on which leaves a smile on the faces of moviegoers in India and the rest of the world.
