In Indian cricket, luck and chance play a large role, which goes beyond talent in determining which players get that break, which ones break into the team at an early stage and which great talents never get the chance to prove themselves.
Talent: The Unmovable Base
In Indian cricket, there is no easy path to excellence. We have a huge talent pool, which only the best of the best break through. Icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli did not achieve the top ranks by chance. It was years of domestic cricket, mental strength, and consistent play that built their base. Talent is the entry ticket; without it, there is no way a career will succeed in the long term.
Talent by itself does not equal success. In the domestic stage, like the Ranji Trophy, many players do well, but only a few make it to the national team. Here is the role of timing.
Timing: Both the Right Time and the Right Place
Cricket careers are also products of chance, which in turn is very much a factor of timing. Injuries to senior players, a drop in form, or a team in a transition phase may open up opportunities almost immediately. MS Dhoni is a case in point; his brilliant performances at the international level came at a time when India was looking for a bold wicketkeeper-batsman. Had that break not come when it did, his rise may have been delayed or gone a different route.
Also, for instance, at the start of a transition, players tend to do better in terms of media coverage, which is different for someone who steps into a team that is already a going concern. Also, a great performance at a key match may really put a career on the map for some, but the same achievement in a less public setting may not get the same attention.
The IPL Effect: Fortune at the Forefront
The Indian Premier League’s entry into the scene transformed the Indian cricket environment. What we see now is young talent getting that immediate exposure, but chance still plays a role. What may turn a rookie into a national player in a single season is being selected by the right franchise, to bat higher in the order, or to play for a supportive captain.
Several players got national team spots after a few IPL matches, but at the same time, those with the same stats had to wait for years. Performance is key, but what also plays a big role is visibility and timing.
Selection, Politics, and Missed Chances
Indian cricket team selections do not run on objective lines. We see in which direction selectors’ interests and ideas of team balance play out. Some players fall through the cracks because by the time they break out, senior players are still in their prime, thus no room for new talent. At the same time, we see players who come along at just the right time to take advantage of a team in transition, which will soon be defined by their play.
In that which is a single dropped catch, a rain-affected match, or a poor series at the start of a career, it is at those times that fortune’s hand play a great role. In these moments, what we see is luck or a lack of it, which may null out all that was put in over a long time.
Talent Sustains, Timing Launches
In the end, chance may present the opportunity, but it is talent that determines how far a player goes. What we see is that those who put themselves in the right place at the right time do have a jump start, but it is the consistent improvement and dedication that sees a player through. In Indian cricket’s past, while chance has played a role in which players broke out into the public eye, what has sustained that success has been skill, fitness and mental fortitude.
In the end, what we see in Indian cricket is a fine line between preparation and opportunity. Talent sets the foundation, timing the spark which ignites and chance which determines when the spotlight is cast upon.
