Early Life and Background
Vandana Singh Chauhan was born on April 4, 1989, in the small village of Nasrullagarh, Haryana.
In a very traditional rural setting, in which she grew up, she stood out from the society and her family, which did not support her wish to go for higher education due to a traditional thought process which held that girls should not go to school. But still, she had the backing of her father, Mahipal Singh Chauhan, which was very rare at that time. He supported her stand and sent her to a girls’ gurukul near Moradabad, thus breaking the norm and setting the stage for her academic success.
This early choice, which was to be the foundation of Vandana’s life, was to be the foundation of a life which saw great ambition, resilience, and her struggle against social odds.
Education: From the roots of language to Law.

Vandana had an education that took place at a girls’ residential institution, which she attended throughout school.
She also got a B.A. (Honours) in Sanskrit from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak.
After which, she enrolled in legal courses at Dr B.R. Ambedkar University in Agra.
Her academic journey, which saw her study the humanities and law, gave her a solid base in terms of intellect and morals. Also of note is that she put in a great deal of self-study into the mix, which, in many cases, was in place of what formal classroom training she may have had because of low family support.
This phase says it all in terms of her discipline and focus.
Cracking UPSC: First Time Around, All India Rank 8.
Driven by aspiration, Vandana appeared in the 2012 UPSC Civil Services Exam, which was her first attempt, and she did very brilliantly to secure an All India Rank 8.
What is also amazing is that she did it all without formal coaching, mostly teaching herself at home, which she did for 12-14 hours a day.
By passing the exam from a rural background in the Hindi medium and going on to become a symbol of hope for many aspirants, including girls from rural and Hindi medium backgrounds, Vandana proved that with determination and hard work, you can transcend traditional barriers.
Administrative Career: From First Post to Nainital DM.

After being selected, Vandana was in the 2013 batch, which went to Uttarakhand.
Her early posts included time as Chief Development Officer (CDO) in Pithoragarh district, which saw her break history to become the first woman CDO there.
She also served in several roles, which included that of Sub Divisional Magistrate and also in administration.
Rudraprayag district, Almora district, and from 17 May 2023, she is the DM of Nainital district, which is one of Uttarakhand’s key and sensitive districts.
Her administration is a testament to her competence, and she is also trusted to take on many important roles.
Commitment to Social Causes & Impact
In terms of what is routine in the field, Vandana has displayed a great deal of interest in social welfare and empowerment. As CDO of Pithoragarh, which is a large part of her time as a professional, she was involved in the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, which saw her in the role of a brand ambassador for the cause of girls’ education that very much plays into her own life story.
Her story and public service record put her forward as an inspiring role model, which is true for young women from rural and underprivileged backgrounds who aspire to success through merit and hard work.

In 2025, Vandana Singh Chauhan, at the age of 36, is an IAS officer who is also at the top of her game and has achieved a great deal.
Her transition from a small village in Haryana to a top administrative post in Uttarakhand is a picture of what education and determination can do.
At present, as India is still in the midst of discussion around access, equality, and social mobility, we see in her a very real example that social structures, be it social tradition, gender role or economic issue, do break.
