Early Life and Background
Swati Sharma was born on the 29th of January 1999 in Singhbhum District, Jharkhand.
Her father previously served as a soldier in the Indian Army and now works with Tata Steel in Jamshedpur.
Growing up in a home that was military, Swati lived in many different places, which in turn formed her worldview at a very young age. For her school years, she attended Army Secondary School in Kolkata for primary education and later enrolled at Tagore Academy in Sakchi for secondary.
She enrolled at Jamshedpur Women’s College, which saw her through till she got her degree in Political Science in 2019. That academic experience in turn set the stage for her interest in governance and public service.
UPSC Journey and Academic Effort
Swati Sharma took the UPSC Civil Services Exam in 2023 — of which this was her third.
Despite initial struggles, she did not give up, went to Delhi for intensive preparation, refined her approach and stayed resilient.
Her choice for the exam was Political Science and International Relations.
When the news broke, she had secured AIR 17, a great achievement which put her in the top rank of her batch.
In the written exam, 59.2% and in the interview, 22.2% which adds up to a total of 103.1 marks.
Current Posting and Role (2025)
As of 2025, Swati Sharma is a member of the 2024 batch and has been assigned to the Rajasthan cadre.
Her first official post was that of Assistant Collector and Executive Magistrate in Bikaner, Rajasthan, a key administrative position early in her career.
At the age of 25, she took on these roles, and as per official reports, her retirement is scheduled for 31 January 2059.
Significance of her achievement and its reach.
Swati’s achievement is of a greater scope than just personal victory. From Jharkhand, a state which puts forth relatively few UPSC success stories, her AIR 17 win brings joy not only to her family but also to the region.
In an interview with the media, she spoke of her hope that she inspired “a greater number of women from Jharkhand” to aim for civil services.
Her path, which took her between cities, into new schools, and which saw her study intensely and ultimately pass the UPSC on the third try, is a great example of perseverance, willpower, and discipline.

Given her background in Political Science and, at present, as Assistant Collector Executive Magistrate in Bikaner, Swati Sharma has a path which is very much there for great contribution to governance and public administration. Her early assignment is a great chance to learn the base level of administration, public policy implementation and citizen engagement, which in turn will shape her future roles.
As she matures in service, from her early days in the field, academic training, and personal perseverance may well see her become an effective civil servant, which in turn may give her the chance to improve the bridge between local representation and administration.
