Early Life and Education
Sriram Taranikanti was born on July 11, 1966, in Telangana, at the age of 59, which will also be his age in 2025.
He showed signs of academic talent at an early age and went on to graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, where he completed his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E. in Chemical Engineering).
Later on, he pursued a postgraduate diploma in Industrial Engineering at T.I.P.I.E., which in turn strengthened his technical base, which would play out in many of his administrative roles.
UPSC Path and into Civil Service

Taranikanti joined the IAS in the 1992 batch, which was from the Tripura cadre.
At the age of 26, he joined as an IAS officer, which was an early success in the very competitive UPSC exam.
Although exact UPSC rank and details of his mark sheet are not made public, what is clear is that he has performed very well and very consistently over the years in tough administrative posts.
Administrative Career and Key Postings
In a career that spanned over 30 years, Sriram Taranikanti held many important and influential posts.
In Tripura, he served as Commissioner and Secretary in departments like Transport, Environment, Animal Resources, and Science Technology; in Manipur, he was Commissioner (Taxes), Sales Tax; and in Andhra Pradesh, he was Director of SCCL and Registrar for NIRD in Hyderabad.
As an Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Executive Director and Financial Advisor at IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India).
Current Role (as of 2025)
In 2025, Sriram Taranikanti is named the head of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie.
LBSNAA, which is the top training institute in India for IAS officers, also see to it that under its aegis, the academy, which is at the forefront in this field, produces the best future civil servants.
His position is that of a Secretary equivalent role and has been extended until 31 July 2026.
Role in the IAS Central Association

Beyond the field of administration, which is his primary responsibility, Taranikanti is also very much involved in the IAS community. In July 2025, he was made a Vice President of the IAS Central Association at the association’s General Body Meeting.
His election is a mark of his standing among peers and his role in policy discussion, mentorship, and in strengthening institutional cohesiveness within the IAS.
Vision and Contributions at LBSNAA
As Director of LBSNAA, Sriram Taranikanti reports that he is focused on leadership, ethics, and citizen-centred governance. Also in his address to officer trainees, “OTs”, he stressed experiential learning, time management, collaboration, and public service, which is founded in empathy and accountability.
During his tenure, the academy also rolled out sustainability measures, for example, we saw the launch of “Shramdan” programs for campus clean-up and efficient waste management, which in turn fulfil his dedication to environmental responsibility.
Retirement and Legacy

Taranikanti is to retire on the 31st of July 2026, which also marks the end of 34 years of his service.
By which time, he will have left a large mark not just through his administrative work but also in the training and mentoring of the next set of civil servants. His long-term involvement in state and central government roles and now as Director of LBSNAA has left him with a large legacy in Indian public administration.

Sriram Taranikanti, known for his forward-thinking leadership, administrative integrity, and dedication, is a respected name in the civil service.
In terms of education, he is rooted in engineering; he has also held leadership positions in finance, regulation, and governance, which in turn have shaped his approach to policy issues. At present, he is cultivating a culture of ethical public service, which includes a focus on competence and character in governance.
