Meet the Panaparambil family, the siblings of megastar Mammootty:
With firmly established roots in Malayalam cinema and a lynchpin of the Indian film industry, Mammootty is certainly the most public figure who has led a public life. His fifty-year career, which has seen an overwhelming amount of public interest, eclipses the private lives of his brothers and sisters. Born to Ismail and Fatima in 1951 as their first child, the actor was the firstborn of a set of six children. His family, originally from Chempu, Kottayam, has always been a staunch source of support for Mammootty’s grand adventure. The focus of this article will be on the lives of Mammootty’s brothers and sisters, Ibrahim Kutty, Zakariah, Ameena, Sauda, and Shafina, as we share their respective journeys through life.
Ibrahim Kutty: An Additional Brother on a Parallel Path Ibrahim Kutty is the most well-known sibling of
Mammootty because he, too, is an actor. Ibrahim Kutty is an accomplished actor in Malayalam films and television. He may not have the megastar status of his elder brother; however, he does have a strong follower base associated with his popular work. The acting legacy continues to a new generation; Ibrahim Kutty’s son, Maqbool Salmaan, is also an actor in Malayalam cinema. Ibrahim Kutty’s YouTube channel, “Ibroos Diary,” showcased another aspect of his personality during the COVID-19 lockdown. He shared intimate parts of his life, such as cooking recipes and routines, which allowed him to develop more relationships with his audience.
Zakariah Panaparambil: Perhaps the Shyest of the Family
While his siblings ventured into the entertainment world, the youngest of them, Zakariah, chose a life free of glamour. To date, Zakariah has not acted or practiced any work that entails an audience, leading a very private life indeed. It constitutes yet another piece of that section of a family where, though being related to a national icon, one chooses to stay in the background. He is in direct contrast with and stands apart from the typical celebrity family that involves itself in celebrity excess to be, on some levels, one with the public.
Ameena Panaparambil: A Cherished Memory
The youngest of the siblings was Ameena Panaparambil, who was only two years younger than Mammootty. Known affectionately as Naseema, she was a central figure in the family. Her passing in September 2023 at the age of 70, following a prolonged illness, was a deeply personal loss for the family. Ameena was married to the late P.M. Saleem and was a devoted mother to three children: Jibin Salim, Julie Salim, and Juby Salim. Her death came just months after the passing of their mother, Fatima, in April 2023, making it a period of profound grief for the entire family. Ameena’s memory is cherished by her family and friends, and she is remembered for her unwavering support and loving presence.
Two Other Sisters: Sauda & Shafina
Mammootty’s two younger sisters, Sauda Panaparambil & Shafina Panaparambil, have both chosen to distance themselves from public exposure. Similar to their brother Zakariah, the two sisters are now married and settled with their own families. Both sisters live a quiet life, so available information about them is practically nonexistent. This
lack of information can be seen as an indication of their clearly expressed preference to remain out of the public domain. The two sisters have long distanced themselves from the public domain to be at peace with this decision that the family and the public would end up respecting. Even for their reasons and benefit, the two sisters have vowed to remain private; just like many other members of the close-knit Panaparambil family, they embrace in a closely knit binding that includes their internationally famous brother and other siblings.
To sum up, while Mammootty’s life is very open to his fans, his brothers and sisters give us access to a family that is down-to-earth and close. It does not matter if they wanted to be in front of the public eye like Ibrahim Kutty or removed from it like Zakariah, Sauda, and Shafina; all the siblings had a part to play in the family narrative. Ameena’s passing only emphasized their relationship with each other. No matter how underrated their respective stories are, it is evidence of the strength of the family to come to terms with the blessings and challenges of having a megastar in their company while maintaining their own identities and decision-making.
