Age & Early Life
Shehzad Poonawala was born in Pune, Maharashtra on 17 October 1987 which at the time of July 2025 will make him 37. Born into a political, moderate Shia Muslim family, at the age of 5 Shehzad lost his father Sarfraz Poonawala. His mother Yasmeen is a homemaker. He grew up with his brother Tehseen Poonawalla who is today a known journalist and political analyst.
Education & Bio
Shehzad’s academic career started at St. Vincent’s High School and at the turn of the decade he enrolled at MIT School of Government in Pune which he did very well in. In 2008 he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Pune and a few years later he got his LLB from the University of Pune. By the side of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas which inspired him greatly, he jumped into politics with great expectation of social transformation.

Mother: Yasmeen Poonawalla is a housewife.

Career
Political Journey: Congress to the BJP.
Shehzad entered politics in 2008 by enrolling in the Indian National Congress. At that party, he worked with people like Digvijaya Singh, Rajeev Shukla and Manish Tewari, also at one point became the vice president of the NSUI in Pune as part of the AICC’s media group. Through the years, he came to disassociate himself from Congress, which he blamed for dynastic politics and for not doing enough for the Muslim community, which in turn brought about his exit in 2017.
Shortly after that, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became the party’s national spokesperson. In December 2021, he was made head of the BJP’s Delhi unit’s Social Media and IT Cell. He is known for his vocal and assertive presence, which also brings him to media debates regularly.
Legal and Media Activities
Qualified lawyer Shehzad has put forward cases of civil rights, which included that of Misbah Qadri and Junaid in Haryana. Also, he has written for The Indian Express and worked with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
Dynastic Reform Advocacy
He was a founder of the “Dynasty Mukt Bharat”, which put forth a challenge to family-based political privilege and put meritocracy forward as a value in public leadership.
Notable Confrontations
In 2017 December Shehzad put forward his challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi which was on his leadership and also the lack of internal democracy we saw from him to put forth live debates to discuss these issues. That incident in turn brought public criticism from his brother Tehseen who put distance between himself and Shehzad.

Shehzad is a little over 5’8” and 5’9” (1.73 1.75 m) in height, and he weighs in at around 60 65 kg. He has black hair, dark eyes, and is into fitness. Also, he practices Islam, but at the same time includes elements of Hinduism in his culture.

In 2025, reports have it that Shehzad’s net worth is of the order of ₹75 lakh (about USD 90,000), which he has accrued from his legal practice, political work, media appearances, and writing. Also, he lives very modestly in a public servant-like manner.
