Shahida Parveen Ganguly was a pioneering figure in the Indian Police Service (IPS) when she was the first woman IPS officer from the Jammu and Kashmir region. Nicknamed by all as either the “Lady Encounter Specialist” or “Tigress of Kashmir” she was rewarded for her bravery in counter-insurgency operations during the late 1990s and early 2000s. In addition to her work in the police force which is very much public and known by all, Shahida has also put herself out there in the media which reports on us as a nation, at the age of 74 she was a chief guest at Indian Idol Season 13 in January 2023.
Age
She was born in 1970 in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir. Shahida was brought up in socio-economic hardship. We do not have her birth date which she made public. As of June 2025, she is 55 years old based on the birth year which is mostly accepted.
Career

Early Life and Introduction to Police Force.
Shahida was the 4th born in a family of six. After the loss of her father when she was age 4, it was up to her mother’s dedication which saw to all the children’s education.
She received a B.Sc. in Math at Poonch Degree College and also did an M.Sc. by distance education. During her studies which were also very much a struggle, she worked as a tutor and radio announcer to support her family.
In 1994 she took the UPSC exam and in 1995 joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police as a sub-inspector after going through intense training at the Udhampur police academy.
Encounter Specialist with SOG

Shahida served in the Rajouri and Poonch’s Special Operations Group (SOG) unit from 1997 to 2002 and also led teams that carried out counter-insurgency operations. In that time she was able to put away over 80 terrorists which placed her among the top officers in the area.
She said that at the time there was an everyday experience of it.
Despite initial doubt that women did not have the skill for field work some seniors thought that women could not do Shahida and did not try it out. In 2000 she turned down a promotion until the whole team was with her which showed her solid and effective leadership.
Recognitions and Further Postings
For which she received the Northern Army Commander’s citation and the Director General of J&K Police’s award in 2002 she won the Police Medal for Gallantry.
She remained posted in the CID as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Jammu and Kashmir and was also deputed in Nagaland. By 2013 she became the first Kashmiri Muslim woman to be promoted to the post of Superintendent of Police.
Shahida at times is a motivational speaker which in fact she will do on Pariksha Parv 7.0 in April 2025.
Still inspires through her public image.
Family
In a humble home in Poonch Shahida grew up in tough times. Though her mother saw to it that she got an education, the father’s early death left the family trying to make do with what they had.
In her case which is not true of her other siblings who are not well covered in public records, what is notable is that which which may have been an atypical upbringing which in turn defined her future.
Husband
In 2002 Shahida tied the knot with Gautam Ganguly, a man in the army.
Being a military wife to a man with two sons (aged at that time to be 17 and 13 in 2025) she balanced her family and her demanding career. While many aspects of her private life remain so, in the public domain it is clear that there is a strong partnership between her and her husband.
Public Presence & Legacy

In January 2023 Shahida joined Indian Idol Season 13 which for her proved that “fear is a construct of the mind” she has no issue with.
At the time of Republic Day’s celebration, the episode was put out which featured national security forces discussing duty and patriotism.
Media reports from Hindustan Times, IBTimes, Outlook, and Times of India have covered her bold actions and groundbreaking career in J&K.
She is a role model for women in the field of law enforcement which she has in turn broken out of many stereotypes and in that which she has inspired large numbers of people.
