When Elon Musk went on to appear in Nikhil Kamath’s People by WTF podcast, which was supposed to be a discussion around technology and business that the public had an interest in. What they did not see coming, however, was a very open and at times unorthodox chat which included personal stories and out-there predictions for the human future. The interview soon became a tech event of the year, not for what was said but for how Musk said it.
A look at the edge issues of AI and human work.
During the course of the discussion, which at times was very surprising, Musk brought up the topic of the future of work. He put forth that we may see that which we are seeing play out in science fiction become reality, which is the replacement of traditional jobs by artificial intelligence and robotics. Also, he presented that what we may soon see is a large-scale adoption of machines taking over the more basic tasks which we do and which we may see humans instead put toward creative, explorative and personal growth activities.

This issue set the internet aglow as Musk put forth AI not as a threat but as a tool that may reframe human purpose. We may see what he puts forth — that instead of working to earn a living, which we do today out of need, in the future we will work out of want, thus turning jobs into what is almost a vocation, out of passion rather than duty.
Unconventional Views on Money and Investing
As a bootstrapped entrepreneur, Nikhil Kamath mostly ran the conversation in those lines of which he spoke from experience. In a rather surprising turn, Musk put forth what may be called as an atypical response; that indeed he does not, in fact, go out of his way to buy shares of public companies as the other billionaires do, instead he focuses on growing the companies he is very fond of.
According to Musk, what is of great value in the long term is achieved by solving actual problems and not by riding short-term market waves. He also put forth that young founders should put the effort into product quality, mission clarity and resilience instead of getting worked up over valuations and exits. This stood out in a world that is ever more focused on easy financial gains.
India, Talent, and Global Innovation
Another key element of the interview was Musk’s talk on India and global talent. He opened up about the very large role Indian engineers and professionals play in the global technology ecosystem. Musk reported that innovation does best when talent can move across borders, and also put forth the case for policies that support skilled professionals.
Beyond policy, Musk also opened up about his personal ties to India, which in turn presented a very human side of the tech mogul to his audience in India. These moments of vulnerability added an emotional layer to what was otherwise a very forward-looking conversation.
Leadership, Stress, and Decision-Making
Musk also talked of the mental aspects of leadership. He reported that which he is at the head of several large-scale companies is very stressful, which includes constant pressure and hard decisions, which take an emotional toll. But what he also put forth is that which you embrace, that even the uncomfortable aspects of it, is key to that which he terms as progress. Note that the last paragraph was a little bit of a translation issue in which “responsible” was translated as “that which you bear responsibility”, which is not quite natural. It is included as that appears to be what the original Chinese was trying to say.
He reported that he has a clear sense of purpose, which guides him through chaos. When decisions are in alignment with a larger mission, stress becomes a manageable issue, and what would be failures turn into learning experiences.
Why This Interview Felt Different
What stood out in this interview were the topics as much as the tone. Musk came across as reflective, funny, and also very into his thoughts. Kamath’s cool and curious put forward which allowed the interview to flow easily, which in turn brought forth issues that don’t typically see the light in main stage interviews.
Conclusion
Elon Musk had a wide-ranging discussion with Nikhil Kamath, which went far beyond technology. We got a rare look into how one of the world’s preeminent thinkers approaches work, wealth, purpose and the future of humanity.
